This work was performed by David Martin while serving in technology leadership roles with McKesson and CoverMyMeds. It is presented as professional experience brought to D W Martin, LLC — not as a D W Martin, LLC customer engagement.

Context

The work began with McKesson's acquisition of RxCrossroads, a Patient Assistance Program (PAP) pharmacy operation based in Louisville, Kentucky. David Martin participated as a McKesson technology representative supporting the merger-and-acquisition effort, with responsibility for overseeing the migration and consolidation of business and clinical applications out of legacy RxCrossroads environments — including environments associated with a previous owner of that business — and into McKesson data-center infrastructure.

Following the acquisition, he was given a technology leadership role over the team supporting the RxCrossroads pharmacy operations. That scope subsequently expanded to additional McKesson and CoverMyMeds pharmacy operations.

Transformation Scope

The pharmacy operations had grown up — or been acquired — on different technology environments. The objective was to consolidate them onto a more standardized architecture centered on ScriptMed Cloud. That meant more than replacing pharmacy management systems: it reached into integration, prescription-referral ingestion, data migration, reporting, analytics, data warehousing, middleware, and custom workflow capability.

Louisville, Kentucky — Patient Assistance Program pharmacy

Migrated from ScriptMed Enterprise to ScriptMed Cloud. This was the first major pharmacy platform migration in the program, and it was completed prior to David Martin's departure.

Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas — Patient Assistance Program pharmacy

Migrated from WellSky CPR+ to ScriptMed Cloud, which required transformation between materially different source and target platforms. The drug-program consolidation and migration for this pharmacy was also completed prior to his departure.

Columbus, Ohio — mail-order and specialty pharmacy

A CoverMyMeds operation running McKesson's internal EnterpriseRx platform, with an additional distribution operation in Memphis, Tennessee. Migration to ScriptMed Cloud was within the consolidation strategy and preparation was underway, but David Martin departed McKesson before this phase was executed, and it was not completed under his leadership.

Scale

These are approximate engagement-scale indicators describing the pharmacy operations involved — not D W Martin, LLC transaction volumes.

  • Each of the two Patient Assistance Program pharmacies processed approximately 10,000 prescriptions per day.
  • The migration effort involved approximately two years of historical and operational data.
  • Data spanned approximately 50–60 pharmaceutical drug programs managed for pharmaceutical customers.

Engineering and Architecture

Data migration

Migration required extracting information from legacy pharmacy systems, transforming and cleansing it, formatting it to target-platform requirements, and delivering it for ingestion. Data analysts developed the SQL that extracted information from the legacy systems. David Martin then developed the Python programs used to clean, transform, format, and package the migration data, which was delivered to ScriptMed through its secure file transfer process.

Integration

Prescription referrals originated in the McKesson HUB business and had to flow into the pharmacy operating environment. A MuleSoft middleware implementation was deployed to carry that integration from the HUB into ScriptMed Cloud and on into pharmacy operations. The MuleSoft capability supporting the completed Louisville and Dallas/Fort Worth transformation was deployed prior to his departure.

Reporting and analytics

The legacy environments offered fragmented and comparatively limited reporting. The transformation consolidated reporting and analytics onto Snowflake, with data pipelines moving information from ScriptMed Cloud into the Snowflake environment to support reporting, analytics, and operational data products beyond the limits of the individual pharmacy platforms.

Closing platform gaps

ScriptMed Cloud did not provide every feature the pharmacy business required. Rather than let those gaps block consolidation, David Martin personally developed several Snowflake Streamlit applications supplying the missing functionality around the platform — targeted custom software used to close operational gaps rather than replace a commercial system that was otherwise working.

Completed Prior to Departure

  • Louisville PAP pharmacy migration to ScriptMed Cloud
  • Dallas/Fort Worth PAP pharmacy migration to ScriptMed Cloud
  • Consolidation and migration of the applicable pharmaceutical drug programs for those two pharmacies
  • MuleSoft integration capability supporting the transformed environment
  • Snowflake data warehousing and reporting capability
  • Data pipelines from ScriptMed Cloud into Snowflake
  • Custom Streamlit capabilities addressing ScriptMed Cloud gaps

The Columbus EnterpriseRx migration remained in preparation and was not completed under his leadership.

What This Experience Informs Today

Experience leading multi-site platform consolidation — while personally writing the migration code — informs how the company approaches enterprise technology transformation, healthcare and pharmacy technology, and data, cloud, and integration work.
